Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have a great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal high priest in the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 6: 18 – 20
When Paul wrote these words he was using an example from real life. When fishermen are on the water in their boat they throw their anchor overboard. It is no longer visible being many feet below snugly holding onto the ocean bottom. There is a chain connecting the boat to the anchor. The anchor keeps the boat from drifting, going in the wrong direction and decreases the effect of wind and tides on the boat.
Our anchor is our hope for all the good the Lord has in store for us. We are holding onto it. The line connected to the anchor (hope) is leads us into the inner sanctuary the “Holy of Holies”- right to Jesus. All we need to do is grab hold of that anchor of hope and hold on tight. Hope leads us. It keeps us from drifting off course as we follow Jesus. It keeps us pointed in the right direction and brings us into His holy presence.
Jesus is Lord!
